This was the second-best high school basketball game I’ve ever seen. The Hendersonville Bearcats, ranked #1 in the state headed to conference-rival R-S Central who was #2 in the state. These teams are obviously very good, and they both played their hearts out.
You knew this game was going to be fast-paced when on the opening tip Keenan Wilkens gets a steal of the jump ball and scores a layup. Just a few seconds later the Bearcats had another steal because of their incredible defensive and quickly jumped to a 2-bucket lead. The Bearcats were able to hold a tie or a lead, never trailing until the start of the 4th quarter. The lead swapped teams with every possession for the fourth quarter, and regulation ended in a tie after ticky-tack foul that was called against Hendersonville in front of the R-S Student section. (Editorial note: that was a poor choice of a call, ref!)
Overtime saw the two teams trade the lead again, but finally R-S Central took a 2 bucket and then more lead due to the typical foul/free-throw game ending activities.
Hendersonville played so hard, and I am so disappointed that they didn’t get the results that they hoped for. They are such a good team, and a great group of young men. I can’t wait to see these two teams face each other in the playoffs – hopefully in the championship game!
